Carinthian 52cm Long Broad Axe

A long broad axe with a double bevelled cutting edge that is 52 cm long this is from 16/17th century from Carinthia, it is lively decorated with garlands and Celtic arcs with points, there are two blacksmiths shields initials JP. The large cross in the middle is the cross of St Andrew (multiplication cross);this mark is very rare to see on axes, on the lower part of the blade towards the rear is what they call the hook this would be used to fasten wooden protection sheaths to protect the cutting edge the sheaths would be fastened by straps around the hook and at front end of blade.. I would say once a handle has been fitted this would be mildly right handed.

price is inclusive of postage to mainland U.K.
