Description
What a splendid plane, the coffin shaped sole measures 7 3/8” in length by 2 1/2” at its widest, the iron is 2 1/8” width discoloured through time with pitting towards the top end, it has a stamp of “ G.W.POPPLE” the plane is of gunmetal construction with a steel sweated on sole, the rosewood infill is fantastic condition with a rolled shape on front bun. The plane itself has no stamp but what is known about George POPPLE is that he worked out of Sheffield and started off in 1879 as joiners, tool manufactures and tool dealers, in 1889 became just tool dealers before becoming just iron mongers in 1923 for a short time. A truly gorgeous smoothing plane that would grace that tool chest or maybe the mantle piece.
