Early NORRIS #51 Hexagonal Nuts Smoother. (39835)

A scarce model plane that is not shown in any of the Norris catalogues, it’s a cast steel model with parallel side walls, the infills are walnut the front bun has cracked but no movement I think it’s due to where the ex owner has stamped his name? There is also a hairline crack to handle behind where the iron sits the steel hexagonal adjuster is stamped “NORRIS LONDON.  The lever cap also cast iron has the hexagonal screw but not stamped with the embossed Norris stamp, this alone is very unusual. these models would have been produced during the First World War and its said a more economically made plane due to restrictions on materials that would have been readily available at this time. Bothe the 2” width parallel iron and cap iron stamped “NORRIS LONDON”. And the iron on this plane has the bitted cutter end and iron stamped “Pat applied for” probably made like this so the end piece could be replaced instead of the full cutting iron. The war rationing of steel, but look at the work involved to do this. Overall a good user still with characteristics of use and a scarce model to find.
